across the area. you can see it right across generally the 95 corridor and that is allowing a lot of fog to develop. visibilities in many spots quarter mile or less. it feels a little eerie out there. eventually later today, we'll see the fog break up. highs expected in the mid-80s today. before cool are weather on the way for the weekend. otherwise, i don't think we'll see a whole lot of rain today. we should start to see things quiet down as far as rain and rain totals. gradual improvement. we do have the morning fog and we do have some relatively warm temperatures. 71 at reagan national. more details on the weather in just a second. back to you at the desk. >> all right, tucker. thank you very much. president barack obama and mitt romney will take center stage tonight in denver for the first of three presidential debates. the candidates are expected to

focus on domestic issues, particularly the economy during the debate. there are nine electoral votes up for grabs in colorado making it a key prize for both candidates. you can watch the first presidential debate right here on fox 5. it starts at 9:00 tonight live from denver. our other top stories, a rough ride for the vice president. the pilot of air force two had to delay landing two times yesterday because of bad weather. the white house saws the pilot had a miss ad approach during thunderstorms at charlotte international airport. it caused mr. biden to be late for a campaign event and then later, rain and fog forced his plane to land at dulles international rather than andrews air force base.

the nats defeated the phillies 4-2. the former governor of california, arnold schwarzenegger, was in d.c. last night promoting his new book and his confessions are raising some eyebrows. >> he says he had open heart surgery without even telling maria shriver until just before hand. he didn't tell her he was running for governor until a few days before announcing it. will thomas has more. >> reporter: the terminator turned governator is touring the country promoting his book, total recall. arnold schwarzenegger says he is embarrassed about his affair with the family housekeeper. when asked if he regrets allowing the housekeeper and the son he fathered with her to live under the same roof with his wife, maria shriver and she didn't know about it, this is how he responded. >> look, we all much smarter in hindsight, that's for sure.

>> reporter: good morning. seems like we've been hearing about this debate for months and months and months now. president obama and governor romney have been practicing their paints and their counter points with debate partners. both camps have been sort of downplaying expectations by talking up their opponents. what happens tonight could change the momentum of the presidential race. preparations are under way for tonight's first presidential election debate in colorado. the showdown between president obama and republican candidate mitt romney will take place at the university of denver. up like debates in the past, organizes say this event will be a little different. >> so what is different about the format is that we are dividing the hour and a half debate into six discussion segments. we think that those extended discussion periods will help the viewers around the world really get a sense of the candidates' views on the key issue. >> reporter: the economy is a key issue on the campaign trail but since colorado is one of

the few states that appears to be weathering the national economic downturn, some won't be voting with their pocketbooks. >> i'm really up in the air as to who i'm going to vote for. i have my reasons for why i'm still up in the air and it comes down to do i want to see a better economy or lose rights. that is the way i look at it i don't i need to know that whichever one is actually listening to the average person, the one who has a fixed income, the one who has minimum wage. >> reporter: one political analyst says this first debate is important since both men have something to prove. >> the public wants to see if mitt romney as an alternative. they sort of know the

andrews air force base. a potomac man jailed in cuba since 2009 may have cannes are. alan gross was cop stricted of spying after distributing internet equipment to scrub a's jewish community. he was sentenced to 15 years in prison. now his wife says he has lost more than 100 pounds and has a growth on his right shoulder. cuban doctors maintain the growth is benign. grose' wife and lawyer are pleading with cuban authorities to release gross on humanitarian groups. in montgomery county, and alleged member of a vile the gang is convicted on assault and robbery -- of a violent gang is convicted on assault and robbery charges. all of these guys showed up and beat this guy up. gang member was convicted based on information from other suspects in the case. six others pled guilty. police believe powell is a member of the crips gang. one of eight camp

counselors fired over the summer for allegedly organizing a fight club at camp in st. mary's county is now facing charges. shane baptiste is charged with second-degree assault. two other youth counselors also may be charged. camp managers uncovered the fighting in early august and immediately notified maryland state police. the camp was closed for the left of the summer. d.c. council members are hoping that voters will approve a bill that would allow the council to spend tax dollars without congressional approval. yesterday, all 11 council members agreed to the bill for the long desired budget autonomy. congress ultimately has the final say in this. the bill would keep federal budget issues separate local government. coming up, an unsettling problem for american airlines, the seats coming loose during flights. the airline says it now knows why. >> a hair-raising journey for one poodle. a wild ride that must have been

a major victory for democrats where the gouge months blocked the state of pennsylvania's new voter i. d. law from going into effect on election day. democrats say it was aploy to key feet president obama by making it harder for the elderly to vote. the judge ruled there wasn't enough time to enact the law to make sure that some voters weren't disenfriend franchised. the results are now in and there is no trace of jimmy hoffa's remains in a sample dug up from a driveway in trie. tipster pointed police to the driveway but it looks like the mystery of his disappearance

dense fog advisory. i'm not this small, honestly. let's get to the temperatures. 70 in washington. off to the north and west, low 60s. 63 in martinsburg and winchester. temperatures will really get a nice pop today. we've got a warm front across the region. can't see it here on this particular radar. it is literally across the 95 corridor. once the front lifts to our north, we'll be in a very warm sector of air here. so our temperatures will get a chance to warm up into the middle 80s. there you can see the cloud cover. we'll have a lot of clouds out this morning but we're done with the showers. don't be concerned with rain today. notice down into central and southern virginia, we are getting some breaks in the clouds. that will move in later and we should see at least partial sunshine along with the warmer temperatures. early fog, 85, nice warm afternoon. going to the nationals game. they still have to win that one. should be a nice afternoon for

coming from from fair oaks to 123. lanes are open. light volume on the beltway leaving annandale towards merrifield. kenilworth avenue looks great. no problems reported south of 50 headed out to pennsylvania avenue. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. virginia has joined a multistate effort to promote alternative fuel vehicles. governor bob mcdonnell announceed a partnership with two energy company to eventually make the fleet of state vehicles all alternative view. they are working with vehicle companies to lower the cost of alternative fuel vehicles. also new, maryland governor martineau malyea has plans to help prevent massive power outages in the state. according to the "washington post," he will release a report today that proposes a new surcharge. customers would pay an extra dollar or two a month so pepco and other companies have funding available to strengthen the grid. the hope is that crews could

complete self years of tree trimming in the next two years. a boil water alert is now in effect after a water main broke tuesday morning. the virginia department of health is advising all residents to boil their water for drinking and other uses until health officials determine the water is safe to drink. tests were conducted and the results should be available by tomorrow. the university of the district of columbia is struggling financially and facing an ann certain future and now it is looking to the district for help. fox 5 obtained a board of trustees report submitted to the d.c. council. it hasn't been released to the public just yet but it outlines a plan to get udc back on its feet including asking the district for $21 million. $10million will go to support its employee separation plan. the school has been criticized for having too many faculty numbers and not enough students. under the proposed plan, the university will increase its efforts to attract more students. you can see the full report on myfoxdc.com. three weeks of terror that
